Urban Steel is the nine member steel band at John Marshall High School in Rochester, New York. We were born in 1999, when members from the Hell’s Gate Steel Orchestra came from Antigua, West Indies, to build our pans. This Pan Project is sponsored by Partners of the Americas which partners Rochester with Antigua (An-tee-ga), West Indies. In April 2005 Urban Steel traveled to Antigua for eight days of rehearsals and performances with the Hell’s Gate Steel Orchestra (now celebrating its 60th anniversary) and the St. Joseph’s Academy Rhythm Masters. In April 2006 our Antiguan Partners will spend a week in Rochester rehearsing with Urban Steel and performing for our community.
